From shipwreck dives in faraway seas to deep dives within the human mind, The Boy on the Log is the raw and remarkable story of one man’s
journey through chaos, courage, and awakening.
When most people would run from some of the things Scott has encountered, he ran towards them. Scott’s life has been anything but ordinary —
from living on the edge as a commercial diver, to a 4-year hair-raising adventure in Saudi Arabia, to facing his darkest moments with
depression, addiction, and loss.
Through every storm, Scott discovered something powerful — that resilience isn’t about bouncing back, it’s about rising with purpose. Blending real-life experience with soul-level insight, he takes readers through the unfiltered truth of mental health, masculinity, and the road back to peace. His story proves that no matter how deep you’ve sunk, you can still find your way home—to yourself.
Raw, honest, and deeply human, The Boy on the Log isn’t a memoir — it’s a lifeline. It’s a call to anyone who’s ever felt broken, lost, or ready to let go, reminding us that even in the darkest waters, there’s light — and that the journey to healing begins the moment you stop running and start listening to your truth.
Scott Soutter is a Sunshine Coast author, speaker and mental-health professional whose work is grounded in lived experience.
Raised in a turbulent and emotionally disconnected environment, Scott learned early to hide his pain behind silence. He battled anxiety,
addiction and profound dyslexia, repeating Year 10 three times. Those struggles followed him into adulthood and eventually contributed
to two major breakdowns, but they also became the beginning of rebuilding his life from the inside out.
Scott began by learning how to breathe again through Buteyko Breathing. He immersed himself in meditation, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic
Programming), emotional literacy and deep personal development. More importantly, he did the daily work required to change his beliefs,
understand his emotions and take responsibility for the direction of his life.
His story is also one of remarkable real-life adventure. Despite his dyslexia, Scott learned to speak four languages, not in a classroom, but through life and travel. His journey has taken him from running a black-market alcohol trade in Saudi Arabia to salvaging rare porcelain from centuries-old shipwrecks in Southeast Asia, working alongside international investors and speaking to audiences of more than 200 people.
Through every adventure, Scott’s greatest discovery wasn’t buried treasure, it was discovering who he truly was.
For the past six years, Scott has worked professionally in mental-health and disability support. He holds a Certificate III in Disability and a Certificate IV in Mental Health. His understanding does not come solely from clinical or textbook knowledge; it comes from living through darkness, rebuilding his own life and helping others navigate theirs.
His debut book, The Boy on the Log, is a deeply personal memoir combining adventure, hardship and inner transformation. Its title was
inspired by a profound meditation in which Scott met his inner child, sitting alone on a log. In that moment, the disconnected pieces of
his life began to make sense. Today, Scott uses his story to connect with young people, men carrying silent struggles and anyone who
needs reminding that their past does not have to determine their future. His message is honest and simple:
“Look what’s possible.” Dare to dream—and dream big.
